So you may be asking, “where the heck did this come from”? To be honest, I am not 100% sure, but it all started at the 2012 Good Sam RV Rally at PIR on the weekend of 3/22/12. Toni and I decided to attend the rally being that it was so close to home and we could see what it is all about. Sometime around the second day of the rally, I attended a seminar titled Ten Things all RVers Should Know. It was held by a gentleman named Ron, who happens to be a full time RVer of 10 years. In listening to him talk about his journey to being a full timer, I began to think about the prospect. It was like some sort of light went on in my head and the idea really began to take over all my thoughts. I looked around at the thousand of others at the rally that already full time. Perhaps it has to do with the struggles we have been facing with the economy and the horrendous hours that I have been putting in. I thought of all the cool places we saw for just moment when we traveled the country with our kids on whirlwind trips every summer in our RV. How awesome would it be to stay where we want for as long as want and see everything we want. Just thinking it through was actually sending chills up my spine. The idea of having everything with us in an RV and no house and all that does with it sounded amazing.
I talked to Toni about my revelation at the end of the seminar, not sure what to expect. Perhaps she will think I am nuts and have me committed to the looney bin. I was more than a little nervous to start the conversation. To my surprise, she was very receptive to the thought. As it turns out, we spent the whole weekend discussing the possibilities. It seemed she was as excited as I was and not as attached to all the “stuff” we acquired over the years either. It seems we made a decision to work towards making it happen. Every since, the thoughts and ideas have just been flowing and we get more excited all the time. The fact that Toni is also exciting has me even more energized and excited.
There is obviously a TON of issues to deal with to get to the point of firing up the RV and heading out on our adventure. I feel it will be very helpful to work through the whole process out loud. To this point I have started a list of all the issues to look into, from mail and medical issues to what to do with the things we do decide to hang onto, not to mention the all important financial details of making this work. Then there is the fact that Toni and I own our own company that we recently purchased, obviously an interesting wrinkle. I have to say that I am willing to live a dramatically different lifestyle to be able to make this happen. There is no doubt it will be an amazing process, just as amazing as the idea of waking up everyday with my wife in whatever location we decide and to be enjoying all the awesome things this country has to offer. I have also encouraged Toni to keep a journal or log of her own as we deal with all the processes we will go through.
It is definitely important to note that we are not telling anyone else of our plans at this point. I am relatively certain that our friends and family will feel we are totally crazy, which is not an issue, but the time and place for those discussions is not upon us at this point. Our thinking at the moment is that we wait until we are much closer to our big move before we spill the beans so to speak.
